The next leg of our South African adventure was Waterfall Boven. I’ve been to Waterval Boven before on an international meet run by the Mountain Club of South Africa. It’s a great sport climbing venue, with a few high quality trad lines too, but it’s certainly the tough sport climbing here that gives it international status.
Our accommodation was at the Roc ‘n Rope bunkhouse. Basic and cheap! Unfortunately we slept very little on our first night as there was very loud party music banging on in to the small hours (actually, quite large hours – 5am!). We learnt the next day that there was a funeral in town – a great way to celebrate a life.
[For those wishing for a slightly quieter accommodation option we realised that a better option would have been the Tranquilitas campsite, which has small basic cabins too. I remembered, when I saw it, that this is in fact where I stayed when I was here back in 2008.]
In the middle of the day there was a thunder storm that threatened to stop play with a heavy downpour. However, we sheltered in a cave for a hour or so, then the sun came back out, the rock dried, and we started climbing again. Brilliant, African convenience climbing. 😉
The Waterfall Boven guidebook is a free download at the moment. Nice!
