A large amount of rain had fallen over night, so much so that during breakfast we joked that we wouldn’t be able to get into the cave today. A moments thought took the smiles off our faces and we went for a walk across the village to look at the water levels. All was brown and very high. A complete contrast to yesterday when the water had been crystal clear with barely any flow. With dive gear still in the cave we decided to see if we could get it out with a fast trip before the water level rose any higher.
We were at the show cave entrance as it was being unlocked and then quickly through to the wild cave beyond. Thankfully the cave was only slightly annoyed and let us in under the sections of low roof which get closed off first. The water in the cave was still flowing down the immature drain passages and hadn’t yet bypassed these to flow into the fossil passage that we were using as an exit. Arriving at the point we had left the dive kit all was well if about a foot underwater.
With the pick up made we headed out fast without waiting to take any pictures which will no doubt upset Pete but hey? We hadn’t earned a cup of tea today but we did get to report to the show cave staff about the water levels in a part of the cave they don’t take parties into.
“wild cave”, “cave … slightly annoyed” – it sounds dangerous down there! I’d stick to Yorkshire if I were you…
PS. Yes, I’m very upset, we need pictures of the wild and slightly annoyed cave next time! 😉 🙂
PPS. That red car in the background of your picture had better have it’s handbrake on tight. 😐
Next time 😯
Yeah, I got the angle a bit wrong with the camera whilst leaning over the fence getting a picture to feed your addiction 😆
