After leaving Spain (see AFF here) we headed to the Alps for our summer holiday proper (I consider myself a climber first and foremost, even to the extent that when someone – anyone – asks me what I do, I answer “climb”, not “work in IT”).
The Alps has seen a heat wave just like the UK in July. And also just like the UK, August has been wet!
So, our two weeks started with an activity I’d have been hard pushed to predict. Whilst out surveying the crags between showers (in the hope that it might be dry the next day), we bumped into a guy picking wild alpine fruit! That was the only prompt we needed to set out on a new wild Pick-Your-Own adventure. The next few hours saw us crouching between every last two inch tall plant in Ailefroide looking for wild strawberries, raspberries and bilberries. Passers by (without the knowledge) must have thought we were very odd – which I suppose is quite accurate!
The result was awesome, at least a pound of fresh fruit. Free and delicious!
