Despite the miserable weather (can it rain more?), we made the journey from the VERY wet Lakes to the REALLY wet Peaks to support Boris’ meet at the Roaches. Staying in Rockhall Cottage (the BMC’s Don Whillans Memorial Hut) was something I never thought I’d do. It’s an amazing place in many ways. The kitchen area is created almost entirely from natural shelter found under massive leaning boulders (as I hope the picture shows). It’s more like a dungeon than a hut. Of course some water (especially when it’s raining as much as it was) gets in between the leaning boulders. The doorway to the kitchen drips, and the walls were running wet. Nice (not)! |
But we had a great time – more of a party than a regular meet.
- A fantastic pawn (starter), bolognese (main), and fresh fruit (desert) meal was provided for everyone.
- A 60 question ultra quiz, covering an amazing breadth of climbing trivia! Do you know the highest alpine summit entirely in France? Or perhaps who cut the bolt on the Boldest in Wales? Well Boris does, and his quiz was hard! The winner scored 15 and took home a prize of the 1st ten issues of On the Edge magazine. While the worst score was 5. They got a wooden spoon!
- A DVD presentation of Nepalese mountaineering and skydiving.
- And, importantly, a bottle of wine was PROVIDED for everyone! Ensuring a great atmosphere…
Thanks Boris!
