With fantastic weather on Saturday, Ian, Anna, Andy, Sabiene and Paul headed over the Solway to the Galloway Hills to meet John and his wife for a long trog up and over Benyellary and Merrick (841m). What a fantastic place! Quiet and unspoilt, probably what the Lakes was like 50 years ago! Â
The descent was more arduous than the ascent… huge clumps and tufts of grass. By the time we reached the car we were ready for a pint in Newton Stewart.Â
Oh, and its called the Awful Hand because the ridges look like 4 fingers and a thumb, as you can see from my picture!
FYI: John’s partner is Annette. Not to forget Muffin the entertaining poodle who always accompanies them.
Why is this called “The Awful Hand”?
Oh my…. what a body….
Are the ridges you refer to for ‘The Awful Hand’ the finely tuned muscles, or something else…?
😉
CALM DOWN LAETITIA!! SEE NEW PHOTO ON SITE, TAKEN FROM A FAR OFF HILL…..
Hmm, I still don’t get that. 😕
I can see the new picture of the hand, but what are you saying? That the island (or hill) in the main picture in some way looks like a hand?
when you are up there, or more accurately, when you look at a map, the configuration of the ridges looks (a bit) like a hand with thumb & fingers…. well with some imagination…. maybe….
Ah, now it finally makes sense! Looked up NX414839 (grid ref for Benyellary) on Multimap, and I could just about see the shape with five “fingers”…
