The weather had remained dry overnight so I took the chance of a trip up to Grey Wife Hole on Newby Moss, an interesting Sunday cave only 15 minutes from the road. The original plan was to go and dive the sump. Common sense prevailed and I went up with the aim of checking the stability of the boulder choke just below the entrance which had shown signs of movement on the previous visit.
I was glad to drop down into the cool of the cave after walking up in the sunshine, accompanied by a fly. The boulder choke looked to be unmoved from the top and the chock stones at the bottom all seemed solid enough. More water than normal was present in the stream way despite the dry weather. Grey Wife normally responds quickly to rainfall and for it to still be running indicates just how wet the ground in the catchment area is. The climb down at the waterfall provided a good soaking and the rift provided the normal entertainment. At the pitch head the ladder and lifeline were found to be in good order unlike Paradox pond which was dark brown. Trying to look into it I was glad I hadn’t bothered to bring any equipment. Next time then…
Back on the surface the sky had clouded over a bit but the day was still pleasant for the walk back down, until I was rejoined by the fly.
We need pictures. š
Perhaps one of the fly? š
Hmm, I remember those 15 minute walks š – they can take all day! š
