George Band, a team member of the successful 1953 expedition that climbed Everest, entertained a big crowd at Kirkby Stephen Grammar School tonight.
Ben Lyon introduced George, having had dealings in Sarawak with George and the amazing assistance offered during their early (and very successful) caving expeditions.
George’s excellent talk included original slides from the expedition as well as very vivid memories. George also talked about the Mount Everest Foundation and the work they do to help the local communities.
Many interesting questions were posed and it was fascinating to hear George speak about his time on the mountain. He also signed copies of his book.
The evenings event was sponsored by Lyon Equipment and Want Media.
The event was to raise funds and the total will be split equally between the Mount Everest Foundation and Kirkby Stephen Mountain Rescue Team.
