Well, another fine day in the Lake District (well the northern fringes).
Heading along narrow and quiet roads towards Longlands north west of Bassenthwaite a small parking area is found leading onto Uldale Fells.
Starting out at 10.15 and finding that I had left my compass at home, I was in two minds whether to start the walk or not. Given that the weather was fine, good visibility and the forecast was good I decided to press on.
A short climb up to Longlands Fell giving fine views led to Lowthwaite Fell and then dropping down to Broad Moss allowed a contour route to Brae Fell. Turning around and heading back up Little Sca Fell and then Great Sca Fell allowed for more fine views across to Skiddaw. A short way on with a little boggy ground led to Knott.
Looking at the map I was in two minds (again) about heading to Great Calva. It is a Wainwright on it’s own and would need to have a walk of it’s own to access it from the closest road-head. So it was, that I chose to continue on and I was pleased I did. A little boggy under foot. Lunch was taken (at 12:15) and a great hot cup of coffee to boost me for the rest of the walk.
Returning to the col between Knott and Little Calva a path down the valley crossed Hause Gill before the ascent of Great Cockup. The climb up was steep and I was running out of energy. What a nice spot. This was my 100th Wainwright. I should have had a little toast, but all I had was Ribena!
Celebrating my 100th Wainwright on Great Cockup
The views were fine, giving a great position to point out the Uldale Fells. The next stop was Meal Fell (the 7th Wainwright of the day). Several cairns could have been the top (so I visited them all).
Returning down Longlands Beck back to the car at Longlands. A fine walk.
However, after looking at the map, I looked at Binsey (just a short drive away with a short ascent) and decided to add this to the days walk.
Binsey is nice fell with fine views around. A great place for a picnic if you have nothing else to do.
The total for the day is 8 Wainwright’s, 18.9 km of walking and 1100 m of ascent.
I’m shattered and Pippa hasn’t moved from her bed.
Where to next weekend?
Good effort dude, sounds like a long way to me… 😀
Pippa looks kind of tired in the last piccy. Looks good tho’,
A full Ganley, most satisfactory!
What, Ganley’s 1st law applies to tops as well? 😯
