After not quite enough dry weather to dive in Tucks Rift, Andy and I headed off to Gents Dig in South Wales to see if the previous lot of heavy rain had done any damage. The good weather held throughout the day, making for a pleasant drive and a hot walk to the cave. Once inside there were obvious signs that large quantities of water had flowed through the upper part of the cave. Normally the higher passages are missed by the water which enters the cave at various points lower down. None of these inlets were flowing in the dry weather, the first time we have seen this for well over a year. Beyond the pitch in the lower section of the cave the signs of water damage disappeared and when we got to the dig site we found it fully in tact.
The next few hours were spent digging and moving spoil. When a stop was forced by high CO2 levels in the dig area we had finally removed all the material that fell in during the last collapse and started digging into undisturbed infill.
An exit was made back to the bright sunshine and the journey back.
Ooooh lovely mud! 😕
