I thought I should venture beyond Ambleside and up to Wrynose. My plan for the day was Great Carrs, Swirl How and Grey Friar. The weather looked fine.
Parking at the Three Shires Stone at the top of Wrynose Pass I headed up the path to Great Carrs. The weather deteriorated and we had a blizzard in a complete whiteout. It made for interesting navigation. It cleared a little as I was contemplating turning round.
We followed the edge and Swirl How appeared out of the mist (see main blog photo).
Pippa was encrusted but she sat patiently while I photographed her.
We left the summit and headed for Grey Friar.
At the summit, we got some great views of Cold Pike and Pike of Blisco and the Sca Fells in the clouds, before returning to the car. As it was only just gone 10.30, it was still early and so I decided that Cold Pike should be visited.
It was a straightforward ascent, but a few sleet showers made it not so pleasant to hang around in.
So back to the car. And yes, it was still early and not yet lunchtime, so a short drive to the top of Hard Knott before bobbing up to the summit of Hard Knott, which also gave some great views to Slight Side & Sca Fell.
Another excellent day. It’s a rest day tomorrow! But I’ve just checked the forecast and it looks good – so it’s not going to be a rest day! Watch this space.
