The first AW Fellwalkers fellwalk of the 2009 season happened this week and although the weather looked a bit grey after work on Thursday felt I ought to make the effort.
It was indeed a bit grey, cloudy and exceedingly windy but a big group of about 20 people turned up at the junction of the A591 with the St John’s-in-the Vale road. An excellent turnout.
Up High Rigg, getting the hight gain over with quickly; along the ridge, being blown around rather more than was comfortable; then dropping down in to the vale and back along the valley in more peaceful conditions. There is a good view of Castlerigg stone circle form the far end of the ridge; one can see how well situated it is in the centre of an amphitheatre of fells. What did they do there? Were there lots of spectators on the distant slopes?
About four of the AW fellwalkers got back to the cars at 9 pm and I was glad I was one of them and not a whipper-in because the stragglers were well behind and I had not brought a torch. Hope they all got back before dark!
No camera! Disappointing, Colin will have words…
