I had a few hours spare on Sunday, while Pete continued serious Tremadog adventures, so I decided to walk from Helyg down the valley to Capel Curig and back again.
No one is really sure where the original route along Nant y Benglog went, but it is said that the track that runs parallel with the A5 was a route of a Roman road. It is also said that the bricks under the bridge near Ogwen Cottage at Pont y Benglog, are reused bricks from a Roman Bridge. Maybe it’s all true, but it doesn’t really matter. It’s a lovely walk, and very easy.
I walked out of the back of Helyg, avoiding the wet boggy sections and found the easiest place to cross the river to make my way to the old road. Despite the distance noise from the A5, the air was filled with bird song and the occasional bleating sheep. The sun was hot and I was very glad to have an ice cream when I got to Capel Curig. :yum:
The return journey provides the better views. Very atmospheric, as I imagined the early climbers making their way up the valley in the 1880’s.
I didn’t see where the wild ponies that visit the hut in the evening were hiding, so I couldn’t take any photos of them.
For such a lovely and easy walk, it was amazing that I only saw two other walkers, and two people on bikes. It seems that most people prefer to use a car to get up the valley.
Looks nice, but you didn’t mention that you had already been up to Main Wall, Cyrn Las, and climbed Crackstone Rib in the Pass before squeezing in this lovely walk!!! 😎
Ah yes, minor trivialities.
Oh, and I also heard in the direction of Wrinkle, “Safe Fiona”, and a little later “Climb when ready Fiona” while I was in the Pass. Hopefully Dave and Fiona will be able to confirm what route they were doing at about midday. Sorry I missed them, but it was very hot, and lunch was calling.
Unless we see the photos, she hasn’t done them 😈
