The scramble up the west ridge of Raven Crag, leading up on to Holme Fell, is a lovely easy way to gain height. Perfect to blow the cobwebs out of our heads following last night’s party… This scramble is often subject to a voluntary ban due to peregrine nesting restrictions from the the 1st March, however, this year the route of the scramble is OK to access.
We’ve done the scramble before but have never gotten around to collecting the letterbox hidden on the summit. Today was the day, a perfect early spring day: cold, but not freezing; dry, but we were too weary to climb; refreshing and just right to enjoy some lovely Lakeland rambling; and with friends along to introduce to the childish fun of letterbox hunting.
We’ve seen them before, in Lundy Letterboxes, but as a first for us in a Lakeland Letterbox we found a postcard left by the last team to locate the letterbox. This was back in June 2010 – so it’s nearly three years between finds. We’ve dated, stamped, and posted the postcard back to it’s owners as requested. Hopefully they’ll receive it soon and maybe end up visiting this post?
