Our time in Leonidio came to an end all too quickly and it was time to start the journey home. But we had planned to take advantage of our location and explore a little of perhaps what makes Greece one of the most famous places on Earth and certainly one of the most ancient civilisations of modern humans…
There was time for one last bit of climbing before we left Leonidio though at the conveniently roadside sector Sabaton…
Then it was time to set off. We’d plotted a slightly indirect route that would take us via Epidaurus with its massive and impressive theatre, and then onwards via the Corinth Canal.
We’d taken advantage of hotel loyalty points from multiple stays away from home due to working commitments and had bagged ourselves free accommodation at the most swanky hotel in all of Athens, the Hotel Grande Bretagne!
After a sleep it was time for serious foot miles exploring ancient Athens and world famous piles of stone including the Acropolis…
Can you imagine how awe inspiring and intimidating it would have been for people coming to Athens two and half thousand years ago (i.e. around 500BC) and being greeted by the sight of these incredible structures!? Most of the rest of the world was living in simple mud and stick houses. What a way to make an impression!
And finally, back to the Grande Bretagne for a drink in what is supposed to be one of the best bars in the world, Alexander’s Bar, before a final sleep in Greece and our morning departure for the airport and back to the UK. That departure wasn’t without difficulty though. The hotel’s central location meant that it was completely hemmed in by road closures on Sunday morning in support of a massive running event being held on the city streets. So we had to leave a little earlier than intended to avoid being trapped. At least it made for quiet streets as the traffic in Athens is truly awful!
