Manikia is a newish Greek sport climbing destination, and it shows! I know it’s a bit of a cliche, but in Manikia’s case I think it’s justified to use, the place is totally unspoiled. There’s no litter, it’s clean, fresh, and very very rural. The place has a really fantastic vibe! Another cliche might be to call it “authentic”, a Greek rural idyll that just happens to be located in a rugged precipitous limestone area littered with cliffs. Many have already been developed with high quality sport climbing, yet many many more cliffs remain to be explored in years to come… The only negative is perhaps the range of intermediate climbing, and the lack of easy routes. A hard climber (grade 7 & 8) will have loads to do, but those operating predominately in the 6s will be wishing for more in a week long trip. If you are limited to 5s and below it’s probably worth waiting till more routes get equipped.
Nick organised for the six of us – Ed & Jana, Steve & Nick, and Pete & Laetitia – to visit. And we had a brilliant week there enjoying the climbing and the somewhat unseasonably verdant scenes liberally decorated with colourful wildflowers.
Here are a few photos that tell their own story…
