Caving and potholing (including SRT – Single Rope Technique) – anything speleological in nature!
On Tuesday evening we attended the expedition dinner which, being held in a Spanish bar, started quite late.
After several months away from Spain Jim and I could take the suspense no longer. We returned to Matienzo, our goal being to find where the water flows into lake Buttermere in the Toca la Vaca system.
Despite snow falling thick and fast at home and despite our road being like an ice rink, we headed to Whitewalls for the annual dinner weekend. The roads were pretty clear until we reached Brymawr. Running, eating, caving...
Ogof Draenen was the destination for Sunday’s caving trip. As with all good caving trips we met Brendan, Jess and Mark, all from Dudley Caving Club, in Luigi’s cafe in Abergavenny. Having found a muddy chamber yesterday we dived in through to Whitworth series with only one O-ring related incident which was quickly sorted.
Having had to walk away from the upstream sump in the Whitworth series in Torca La Vaca when we ran out of time on our previous visit to the Matienzo area both Jim and I were keen to return.
I was just a little worried with the description of the proposed mine trip. The “bridge of death”, and a dingy that kept deflating had me very close to going for a walk above ground. But Pete’s enthusiasm “it’ll be a great adventure!!” finally won me over.
